Spike Lee’s “She’s Gotta Have It” is back for a second season on Netflix. Nola Darling embarks on a journey that will allow her to discover her true purpose as an artist.
Her character archetype evolves from a confused artist to a fearless artist that is not afraid to show how the American society makes her feel. How America makes minorities feel.

As an artist, she is conflicted between being extremely blunt as well as sensitive. It comes as a challenge after her trip to Puerto Rico, where Mars’ mom insists that she follow her inner convictions to guide her to really speak up for marginalized communities.
This season’s sex scenes with Nola Darling and her love interest Opal really spiced things up. Oh yeah! It seems as if Opal is might be the one for Nola. Despite, her other love interests that we saw her with in the first season.

A few familiar faces are brought back to this season like Shemekka, the Overstreets, Mars, Papo, Rachel, Greer, LuLu, and Winnie. We actually get to see their character archetypes develop more as they go through their own trials and tribulations.
We get a deeper look at the impact of black market booty injections with Shemekka, Nola’s fiery Jamaican friend. Shemekka makes a visit to the motel where she got the injections that ruined her body and let’s just say that there is one less fraud plastic surgeon out there on the streets.
It would not be a “Spike Lee joint” without embedded messages that educate people about the true history and organizations that have helped minority communities to thrive in America.

Through the character Mars, Lee is able to communicate the true story behind Christopher Columbus and his “discovery” of America.
While Nola, Mars, Shemekka, LuLu and Winne are in Puerto Rico, we are presented with the cast donating to the Carmelo Anthony Court La Perla, the Techno Relief Foundation, and a women’s shelter.
For those that did not finish the season, I will not be the one to fully spoil this for you. “Cross my fingers hope to die stick a needle in my eye,” as Mars would say. Just know you are in for plenty of laughs, tears, and enlightenment.
