From Black-ish creator Kenya Barris, Insecure co-creator Larry Wilmore and executive producer Anthony Anderson, grown-ish, a spinoff of the highly successful show Black-ish, is set to premiere on Wednesday, January 3rd at 8/7c on Freeform!
The show will follow Zoey Johnson (played by Yara Shahidi), the eldest of the Johnson clan, as she learns to navigate college, friendships, dating and everything in between. While there will be cameos of some of the original Black-ish characters, the creators of the show wanted to emphasize how independent Zoey has to become now that she is away from home, making room for new interesting characters in Zoey’s life. The show will regularly include some familiar characters such as Charlie (played by Deon Cole) and Aaron (played by Trevor Jackson, who was introduced in Season 4 of Black-ish). We will also be introduced to a slew of other new characters, such as Zoey’s new roommate Ana (played by Francia Raisa), free spirit Luca (played by Luka Sabbat) and classmates Skylar and Jazlyn (played by Chloe and Halle Bailey also known as Chloe x Halle).
The show is premiering at a great time while many high school seniors are mentally preparing for their transition to college and those who have already attended are reminiscing about their prime.
The official theme song of Grown is performed by castmates Chloe x Halle.
