Move over Spider-Man and make room for Spider-Woman! It has been confirmed by Entertainment Weekly, The Hollywood Reporter, Variety, and other sources that Spider–Woman will be featured in the sequel to 2018’s Oscar-winning film “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The actor who was chosen to play Jessica Drew, better known as Spider-Woman is “Insecure” star Issa Rae. Joining Rae in the cast lineup are Shameik Moore and Hailee Steinfeld, who will reprise their roles as Miles Morales (a.k.a. Spider-Man) and Spider-Gwen. The upcoming sequel will be directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson. While Phil Lord and Chris Miller are returning as producers and writers. Amy Pascal, Avi Arad, and Christina Steinberg have signed on as producers, and Alonzo Ruvalcaba has signed on as co-producers. David Callaham will also write the script with Lord and Miller.
Per reports, the plot details for the film are being kept under wraps, but a release date has been set for October 7, 2022. According to Entertainment Weekly, Rae shared her excitement via her Instagram story saying, “The way I have loved Spider-Man since the third grade, A dream come true.” She is currently filming the fifth and final season of her popular HBO comedy series Insecure and starring in and executive producing A Black Lady Sketch Show.
