One of the most exclusive and luxurious brands Hermès is the Birkin bag. This bag was named after British and French icon Jane Birkin that ultimately has a year’s long waiting list to even potentially get one. Despite this, there is so much more to these handbags than most know. With that, check out these five facts on the iconic bag:
1. You can rent a bag for the week
If you’re not really trying to commit to the bag where you want to test it out before you actually spend a fortune there is an e-commerce site called VillageLuxe which launched last year and it lets you try a bag before you buy, so you can essentially rent a Birkin for $295 a week. Afterwards, you could either send it back or go ahead and buy it.
2. It takes 48 hours to make a Birkin
All of the bags are manufactured by a single artisan in one of Hermès workshops. It takes each artisan present 48 hours to create the bags. The bags are essentially handcrafted.
3. There are only around 200,000 bags that are circulating.
Hermès at this moment in time doesn’t take specific client orders anymore. As a result, clients must wait for the bags in the shades and hues they yearn for to arrive in stores.
4. The most expensive Birkin was sold for $380,000.
In May, Christie’s auction house set a world record when this matte crocodile Birkin with diamond-encrusted hardware sold at auction for $380,000.
5. It was designed on an airplane sick bag.
The Birkin bag was made for Jane Birkin by the CEO of Hermès in the early ‘80s when he sat on a plane with her and saw that all of her belongings were falling out of her purse. When was creating a new bag for her, they sketched her ideal look on the back of an airplane sick bag.
