In a recent press release, Nike announced a new addition to their sportswear, the hijab. The headscarf gives a chic look to traditional veils worn by Muslim females. Made of a simple polyester material, the new accessory offers a loose fit around the neck region. With the signature Nike symbol on the temple of the hijab, the snugged fitting around the head would still allow female Muslim athletes to perform well.
In the midst of President Trump’s Muslim ban shenanigans, the sportswear company has made a political statement with the Nike hijab. It promotes solidarity of all religions and the inclusion of women in several sports professions. Even if this fashion statement was unintentionally political, it was a beautiful mistake.
The new apparel shows that society should be more acceptable of individual fashion expression. More importantly, the launching of this apparel shows Muslim women in a different light, a light that defies the conventional religious lifestyle of a Muslim woman. The Nike hijab is said to be released in 2018.
