While the Pirelli calendar is known for its glamour, the 2018 edition of the calendar has a special added touch – the entire cast is black. The all-star cast of entertainers ranging from models, actors, musicians, and comedians graced the calendar in an “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” by Lewis Carroll’s themed shoot.
Some of the fan favorites include RuPaul as the Queen of Hearts, Sean “Diddy” Combs as the Royal Beheader, Lupita Nyong’o as the Dormouse, and Lil Yatchy as the Queens’ Guard.
“We are the royal beheaders,” Diddy said while shooting alongside Naomi Campbell in London. “‘Off with their heads!’ That’s how it will feel when people see these pictures too. In a positive way.” What they are ‘beheading’ is much deeper than the storybook.
Stylist Edward Enninful expressed that recreating an “Alice in Wonderland” themed shoot reflected the reality that some people have fallen down the “rabbit hole” and don’t have their voices heard.
The calendar has slowly evolved into a social commentary since its start in 1963 as a calendar that solely celebrated female beauty.
Unfortunately, the calendar is considered so high end that it is not sold to the public. Instead, it is gifted to celebrities at events.
