Eddie Murphy has been at odds with the hit comedy show Saturday Night Live for over two decades, but he is now set to host an entire episode on December 21st of this year. At the beginning of his career, a joke was said while he was hosting the show that he took as a low blow. One SNL member, David Spade decided to take a shot at his career as a whole when mentioning Eddie’s back-to-back failed movies. Since 1984, Eddie has only made one brief appearance on the show in 2015.
He spoke on the occurrence years later in an interview with Rolling Stone: “What really irritated me about it at the time was that it was a career shot. It was like, ‘Hey, come on, man, it’s one thing for you guys to do a joke about some movie of mine, but my career? I’m one of you guys. How many people have come off this show whose careers really are fucked up, and you guys are shitting on me?’ And you know every joke has to go through all the producers, and ultimately, you know Lorne or whoever says, [Lorne Michaels voice] ‘OK, it’s OK to make this career crack…'”
Following his reprise from SNL, it is well known that Eddie’s career soared. He was able to become one of the most sought out and successful comedians of our lifetime. From The Nutty Professor to Shrek, Eddie has managed to fill all of our hearts with laughter. It is apparent that fans are more than excited that Eddie is making a reappearance on the show and so are we!
