Rarely ever does an artist ever leave you yearning for more. No/Me is an artist that constantly leaves me with that feeling. Always being true to her craft, it is always quality over quantity with her and her latest official single release, which is the third in three years, lives up to that bill. We first began covering No/Me in 2019 in our NEXT UP music column and her growth within the last year is very much so apparent in her latest single release.
No/Me was kind enough to give us some insight into the concept of the song and how it represents the inner conflict within herself and music executives.
“As a female in the industry, only half of “making it” lies in how good the music is. The other half involves fighting for what you really want, your path, and your vision. There are so many gatekeepers who you have to get on your side, and most of them are male executives, producers, managers, and I feel like I have had to do twice as much work to prove that I’m legit, and willing to go there.
Throughout my development as an artist, I experienced so much harassment in the workplace. From one man telling me “not to show the right side” of my face in photo shoots because it’s not “pretty”, to another telling me to stay quiet in label meetings so I wouldn’t come off as “too smart”. What the fuck does that even mean?
Pass The Knife is written as the alter ego of everything I wish I could have said in the situations that made me uncomfortable, but didn’t because I didn’t feel like I was in the position to, I wasn’t empowered to, and I was too scared to say because I didn’t have a team who would support me in speaking up for myself.
Fortunately, those experiences have led me to find and surround myself with an incredible team who not only inspire me, but empower me to be the best, most honest version of myself in all situations.”
