It feels like it has been eons since we heard new music from Frank Ocean. Fans and music lovers have been on a continuous emotional roller coaster in relations to Mr. Ocean and this new music. Twitter has not been the same since the initial rumor of Frank’s third anticipated album entitled Boys Don’t Cry. Everyone simply wants to know: “Frank! Are we getting a new album or not?”
The last time we heard a project from Frank Ocean was in 2012 when he blessed the world’s ears with Channel Orange. The album featured appearances from artists such as: Andre 3000 and Earl Sweatshirt. According to Billboard, the album’s peak position was number two on the Billboard 200 charts. The album was so good it even took home a Grammy at the 2013 Grammy Awards for “Best Urban Contemporary Album.” Solidifying his position in the industry, Ocean has teamed up with the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Jay Z, Kanye West, and Beyoncé (just to name a few). Along with his musical expertise, Ocean also showed his versatility and skill as a songwriter writing for the likes of Beyoncé and Justin Bieber.
Fast-forwarding to the present, fans worldwide continue to sit around angry, confused, sad, and eagerly waiting for the moment when Ocean releases his next album. In April 2015, Rap-Up stated the singer announced this new album on his website “The R&B crooner” shared a photo on his website FrankOcean.com along with the caption, “I got two versions. I got twooo versions…” and the hashtags #ISSUE1, #ALBUM3, #JULY2015, and #BOYSDONTCRY. TheFader made a timeline of the past year following the announcement of Ocean’s third album. The timeline shows various posts and images of Ocean in the studio and on Facetime calls with various people throughout the year. Ocean has been seen publically out and about on several occasions, but there have been no new singles released.
In February of 2016 the world went insane when they heard Ocean on Kanye’s seventh studio album, The Life of Pablo. Ocean delivered powerful vocals on the song “Wolves” which was then edited and changed by Kanye to feature both Sia and Vic Mensa. Kanye removed Ocean’s part and placed it as its own song called “Frank’s Track.” Ocean also attended Ye’s “Yeezy Season 3” fashion show in New York.
TheFader also revealed, following the fashion show, unreleased Frank Ocean music surfaced SoundCloud but was immediately removed. They went on saying the person who created the post claims the music came from a “very very secret Frank Ocean listening party.” Now in June, rumors of the album’s release resurfaced Twitter yet again. The new word on the street this time was that the album was coming on Friday, June 3. Complex states, “Twitter account Snatched Bops tweeted that the elusive singer’s next album will be dropping Friday, June 3(Didn’t Happen BTW). It’s easy to be fooled by these guys because they make their tweets look semi-official.”
Swiftly following this news, Twitter became chaotic, only to be disappointed once more when the expected release date came and went with no new musical content being released. Although there has been no new music, some artists have decided to voice their input on Ocean and his upcoming project. Complex states, “James Blake said “it is absolutely worth the wait,” noting, “He is onto something, he really is.” Chance the Rapper also spoke about the whereabouts of Frank and explained why he’s been so hard to find lately: “I know he’s away making a masterpiece. I think that Frank is very, very focused on his catalog. Anything that you hear him on that’s a feature was recorded a long time ago… I don’t think Frank is working on anyone’s stuff except for his own.”
Well, whatever you’re “onto” Mr. Ocean we are all eagerly waiting for you to share it with us. The questions that rise now are: How many more fake “release” dates can fans endure before they put they throw their hands up and stop caring? Will Boys Don’t Cry ever release? Please Frank, just give the people what they deeply long for and release the music.
