We’ve all had moments where we’ve become so invested in Netflix shows . We watch one show and then we end up binge watching a whole slew of shows . It has become an integral part of what makes Netflix the platform that it is. With that, here’s a little list of some hip-hop films and documentaries that are on Netflix now:
1)Dope
This is a coming of age tale based in Los Angeles that surrounds the lives of three teenagers and how they share a bond over ’90s hip-hop and style before they form their own kind of punk rock band. They soon then become engrossed in a twisted and kind of dark alley where they encounter a local drug dealer at a party (played by ASAP Rocky) and they just go down a whole path of adventure.
2)Biggie and Tupac
Probably one of the most distinct and definitive documentaries of our generation that we love despite the fact that the paisley British nurture seems better suited for a film about endangered animals than hip-hop is one of the most infamous rap beefs of the time.The film is interwoven message detailing how friends were torn apart by strife and killed by outside sources that no one can identify The film also has plenty of interviews by MC’s that were close to Biggie and Pac including Biggie’s mother and even an interview with the man that is at the heart of these unsolved murders which is Suge Knight .
3) Belly
Starring Nas and DMX, two of the biggest rap names at the height of their careers, DMX and Nas play childhood friends “Sincere” and “Buns” . As they reach adulthood their empire was primarily built on crime Sincere than the flex and wonders if his decisions in this lifestyle . As a result, he joins a Muslim organization and Buns is trapped in the world of criminality and in order to be immunized of his problems the cops tell him he has to assassinate the leader of the Muslim organization.
4) Fresh Dressed
This documentary chronicles the hip-hop and urban culture through the years. It details fashions from the boroughs of New York at the time, as well as sharing interviews of Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, and Damon Dash. It’s a passionate tale about the freedom of expression of originality through fashion.
5) Hip- Hop Evolution
This documentary is a four-part series that is docked with interviews from influential MCs, DJs ,and music moguls that trace the evolution of hip-hop through the ’70s and the ’90s. The series starts off with an interview from the controversial Afrika Bambaataa ,and what he has done for the community entirely. Although the interview was a bit hard to digest, it didn’t take away from the message of the roots of the hip-hop genre.
