In a day and age where terror seems to be on the rampage, natural disasters are smothering the country left and right and the opinions of the people seem to be split more than ever. No one is trying to work together to figure out what it is we need to be able to understand one another.
However, there was an event in which it was said that we should be unified. A glimmer of hope in an otherwise darkened tunnel with no light shining to signify a way out. That event was none other than the CMT Artists of the Year show.
The night was filled with star studded performances from Andra Day, Common, Little Big Town, Lee Ann Womack, Danielle Bradbery, Luke Bryan, Phillips Phillips, Keith Urban, the Backstreet Boys, and Chris Stapleton. Many songs were heartbreakingly beautiful and spoke words of utmost truth.
While the show was of course made to honor these amazing artists and their hard work put into years of making music, it took a turn for something even better. Songs that were originally made for other purposes took on a whole new role of speaking to America. There was, as usual, the music show banter with jokes cracked here and there, but the energy in the room that night was different.
Not only did people come together to feel the unifying power of music and try to create an aura of appreciation between all American citizens standing up for each other, but the honorees – Chris Stapleton, Florida Georgia Line, Jason Aldean, Keith Urban and Luke Bryan – gave incredibly moving speeches about recent tragic events, hardships, losses and of course… how we are going to get through it all together.
Music has the power to heal people, the artists seemed to recollect through their speeches and performances. “We’ve been tested against our worst nightmares these past few months – heartbroken doesn’t even begin to explain how some of us feel,” Jason Aldean told the crowd from the stage. But he continued to explain that together, Americans will triumph, and this night was meant for us: the victorious, the triumphant, those who give a damn about each other.
The musical evening was one of magic and the magic of music will continue to bring us back together once again.
Here’s a clip from the evening to give you a taste of the phenomenal performances given.
